24-Hour pH with Impedance Study

What Is a 24-Hour pH with Impedance Study?

The 24-hour pH study test is an outpatient ambulatory medical procedure that evaluates acid and non-acid reflux from the stomach to the esophagus over 24 hours. This continuous monitoring helps doctors accurately diagnose conditions like acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This test involves placing a small, flexible probe in the esophagus, which records acid levels as you go about your daily activities, providing valuable insights into your digestive health.

At ADROIT Speciality Hospital, we have a team of experts who perform the test with advanced technology to ensure precise and comfortable monitoring. The results help guide personalised treatment plans, improving symptom management and overall well-being. If you are experiencing frequent heartburn, chest pain, or swallowing difficulties, the 24-hour pH test can be an essential step toward effective diagnosis and care.

pH with Impedance Study - The Gold Standard for Reflux Testing

The 24-hour pH with impedance study is an advanced test that measures both acid and non-acid reflux in the esophagus. Unlike the standard pH test, which detects only acid, the impedance part can identify even weakly acidic or non-acid reflux, including gas or a mix of liquid and gas. This makes it especially useful for patients who continue to have symptoms despite taking acid-suppressing medicines or those with non-erosive reflux disease (NERD). It also helps track how far the reflux travels and how it relates to the patient’s symptoms.

The test, combined with symptom recording, allows doctors to better distinguish NERD (where reflux causes symptoms) from functional heartburn (where symptoms are present without significant reflux). It is also the only test to confirm that a patient is having LPR (Laryngo-pharyngeal reflux)

Overall, pH with impedance gives a more complete and accurate picture of all types of reflux episodes than a pH test alone.

What Should Patients Know Before 24-Hr pH Impedance Testing?

A 24-hour pH impedance test is a specialised diagnostic procedure that requires some simple preparation to ensure accurate results. Proper pre-test instructions help in obtaining reliable readings of both acid and non-acid reflux episodes.

Patients should schedule an appointment and receive appropriate pre-test instructions. Regular medications being taken should be discussed with the doctor. The doctor may advise stopping certain PPI medications 7 days before the test. If stopping these medications causes significant discomfort, medical advice should be sought, and alternative medications may be prescribed temporarily.

On the day of the test, patients are advised to stop eating and drinking at least 4 hours before the procedure.

From the last 6 years I was suffering from Hiatus Hernia. In this clinic, the patient goes through 24 hrs PH study and Manometry test before going to surgery. The main reason behind this detailed report is to know whether the patient needs surgery or not. Best experience with Dr. Chirag Thakkar sir.

My wife suffered severe acid reflux (GERD) for 4 years. She underwent a 24 hour PH test and Manometry test to know the exact cause, was diagnosed with acid reflux and advised hiatus hernia surgery. Three days after surgery she is recovering very fast with no problem in eating or walking.

    Abinash Kumar Sahu

I was suffering from GERD for 5 years. As per Dr Thakkar's advice I got the Manometry and pH with Impedance study done. Even when I came with surgery in my mind, he advised me not to consider surgery at present. He really gave me very genuine advice according to my problem.
